PreCon: Wild About Wildflowers/Colleen Miniuk-Sperry
Limited Capacity seats available

Starts at Parkwood Studios for a 2 hour in depth presenation, then hands on working at the Desert Botanical Gardens (Fees Paid for in your Tuition)

Are you wild about wildflowers?  Does macro have your brain in a big knot?

Join Colleen Miniuk-Sperry, the co-author/photographer of the recently published guidebook, “Wild in Arizona:  Photographing Arizona’s Wildflowers; A Guide to When, Where, and How,” and become one of the “poppy-razzi!”  This half-day session is aimed at taking your macro flower photography - and passion! - to the next level.

Through a blend of classroom and field-based sessions attendees will learn:

  • ·         Use a visualization-driven approach to identify a subject to help you record your personal vision beyond "just another flower" picture.
  • ·         Control your focus and manage short depth of fields through aperture, subject placement, and focus stacking.
  • ·         Seek out pleasing lighting conditions in the middle of the day and modify the light to help strengthen your visual message.
  • ·         Incorporate effective solutions for handling windy (and no doubt, frustrating!) conditions.
  • ·         Utilize artificial backgrounds to simplify compositions.

Bring any camera, macro or telephoto lens (extension tubes or close-up filters optional), tripod, cable release, reflector/diffuser, mat boards (black, brown, green, and blues work best)—and of course, your enthusiasm for wildflowers!

Starry Starry Night Photography (Full workflow for panoramic long exposures)

Taking photos of the night sky and seeing just how many stars there are is always awe inspiring.  Creating new compositions and experimenting with the stars has been an ongoing quest for me.  Studying the Impressionistic Painters benefits many types of photography so I choose the obvious when to apply this to the night sky, Vincent Van Gogh.  In this presentation we will run thru the complete workflow from compositional ideas, to camera settings and into the computer where we cover development, noise reduction tips, star stacking, stitching, compositing and finishing touches.

Software covered – Adobe Lightroom & Photoshop, StarStaX, PTGui (stitching) & Nik Color Efex Pro

Studio Lighting Demo
One of the advantages of using studio lighting is the control we have of light. For example, a white background can be kept white, turned grey, turned completely black, or even changed to another color by simply changing how light spikes it. This demo will show some basic studio techniques lighting the subject as well as the background.
Detail:Ideally a three light setup, key light, hair light, gelled light for the back ground. Can also do a two light setup, key light, fill light.
I will show how to light the model, ensure the model is separated from the backdrop and either lightly illuminate the backdrop or use a gel to change to a completely different color.

Basic Studio Beauty-Portrait Lighting
In this class I'll be sharing the basic guidelines for creating classic beauty-portrait images. Too often setups can seem complicated or difficult, and I want to show you how simple it can be to create a standout image without frustration or unflattering lighting. You can expect to learn or get a refresher on light patterns, my thought process on lighting an image, and you'll also see a demo of me building several simple setups from scratch. I'm a hands-on/visual learner myself, so it's important to me to share my thought process from start to finish. That said, don't expect ratios and histogram readings because I am going to show you how I light by building and fine tuning. I look forward to sharing a little bit of the knowledge I've gained throughout the years.

Closing Keynote: Creators Path
What does it mean to be a photographer when the camera has become a paintbrush? Giulio Sciorio will inspire you to look at photography with a fresh eye and to see that sometimes the path of least resistance is the most obvious one. From cave paintings to wearable cameras, Giulio will put the pieces of the puzzle together and show a future where photography is more valued and varied than ever

****NOTE**** I’ll be tying in a lot of my beginnings of photography in Phoenix from overcoming the death of my best friend and inheriting his camera to using photography to grow my business out of poverty and become an industry leader. There will be a strong focus on inspiring photographers of all skill levels to reach for their dreams through bold action and beautiful imagery.
